The story begins with Franz dreading going to school, as he has not prepared well for a lesson on participles. As he reluctantly heads to class, he notices unusual quietness around him; typically, there is more commotion. When he arrives, he finds his teacher, Mr. Hamel, has well dressed formally, which is unusual for him. The atmosphere is solemn, and even the villagers are in attendance at the last benches of class that they were always empty.
Mr. Hamel then explains the reason for the serious mood: due to the Prussian government’s decree, this would be the last French lesson in their school, as German would henceforth be the language taught. Franz is shocked and feels a sense of regret for not appreciating his studies and his language more deeply.
