Summary of "The Rattrap"

The Rattrap summary is about a man who is a peddler. He has a pessimistic attitude towards the world. The peddler has not always been like this and was a fine man before. However, due to misfortune, he now resorts to selling rattraps, begging and even stealing to survive the land. Moreover, he also views the world as a big rat trap and even trapped humans. He believes that much similar to the cheese we put for mice, the world offers us materialistic things to lure us. So, when we fall for these things, it traps us and takes everything away from us. In this story, a young generous woman takes in the rattrap seller. Thus, the generosity and kindness she shows changes his pessimistic take on life. This story teaches us about the essential human goodness we all must possess.


The story begins with a rattrap peddler who is in a rugged condition here . He is dressed in rags and is very frail and looks starved. We learn he has no home, no money and sometimes even begs and steals to survive in the world. He leads a lonely life with no family and no one to care about him. One fine day, it strikes to him that this whole world is a rattrap itself. If we touch it, it will trap us and never let us go outside. He goes on to think that there are people out there who are already in this rattrap and reaching for the bait. On one cold evening, he reaches at a cottage to ask for shelter. An old crofter lived in that cottage who took in the peddler.


The crofter needed company so he welcomes the peddler. because crofter has no family.He gives him hot food and even tobacco to smoke. They play cards and start talking. The peddler learns that the crofter got thirty kronor for selling his cow milk which he keeps in a pouch on the window frame to pin up. The peddler leaves the next day but after seeing the crofter leave his cottage, he comes back to steal the pouch of money.

After stealing it, he takes the woods to remain unsuspected.he was very affraid. In the wood, the peddler meets an ironmaster who mistakes him to be his old comrade. He invites peddler over for Christmas but he refuses because it's not really captain. After that, the ironmaster’s daughter, Edla visits him and insists him to stay with them. In between, he feels sorry for stealing the crofter’s money. They help the peddler get a makeover and dress him in nice clothes and shave his beard off. After this, the ironmaster realizes he has made a mistake; the peddler was not his comrade.


Thus, the ironmaster thinks he is a fraud and decides to turn him in. However, Edla insists on letting him stay and celebrate Christmas with them. Her father agrees, and they celebrate Christmas together. Next day, the ironmaster and Edla learn that the peddler was a thief through the church about the incident at the old crofter’s. peddler didn't educated.They head home in a hurry thinking he must have stolen all the silver. However, to their surprise, the peddler did not steal a thing. He left a note for Edla in the form a tiny rattrap. There was also a note thanking her for her kindness. which saved him from the rattrap, that want he got caught in. Most importantly, he also left the crofter’s money asking to return it to him.

Conclusion of The Rattrap

To sum up, The Rattrap summary, we learn that we can change the world through kindness and compassion; in addition, it teaches us that materialistic things never bring inner joy, only love and respect does.the peddler become a good person of this incident.

Q.1. From where did the peddle get the idea of the world being a rattrap?

Ans. One day the peddler had fallen into a line of thoughts which really seemed to him entertaining and no one can imagine how sad and monotonous life can appear to such a vagabonds. Who plods along the road, left to him meditation. The peddler was track by the idea that the whole world with its lands and seas, it cities and village was nothing but a big rattrap

Q.2. How was he amused, why this idea?

Ans. He thought of sad and monotonous life as he plods along the road. His business was not especially profitable, so he had to resort to both begging and petty thievery to keep body and soul together. He had naturally been amused by the idea that the whole world around him. The whole world with its land and seas, it's a village and town was nothing but a rattrap.

Q.3. Did the peddler expect the kind of hospitality that he received from the crofter?

Ans. No, the peddler didn't expect the kind of hospitality that he received from the crofter as the world had never very kind to him. And on the other side, old man very generous with his confidence as with his porridge and tabacco, Not only he gave him a big slice of tabacco for the strangers pipe to smoke but also entertained the stranger by 'playing majalis' with an old pack of cards untill bedtime.

Ans. The crofter was so talkative and friendly with the peddler because he was an old man living in a little grey cottage by the roadside alone without wife and child. Finally he was happy to get someone to talk to him in his loneliness.

Q.5. Why did he show the thirty kronor to the peddle?

Ans. The crofter showed the thirty kronor to the peddler just to share a joy of earning that much of money in a month. He also showed it to him as he suspected that his guest did not seem to believe what he had narrated him. The crofter narrated his story of living a comfortable life and having a reasonable income that he made due to his extraordinary cow that gave lot of milk. He told peddler that he had carned thirty kronur last month. But the peddler express his disbelief.

Ans. No, the peddler did not respect the confidence reposed in him by the crofter. The crofter showed thirty kronor the next, day the rattrap seller stole his money and ran away.

Ans. When he walked along with the stolen money in his pocket he felt quite pleased with his smartness. At first the did not continue on the public highway, but must turn off the road into The Woods. During the first hours this caused him no difficulty. Later in a day it became worse, for it was a big and confusing forest which he had gotten into. He walked and walked without coming to the end of the wood and finally he realised that he had only been walking around in the same part of the forest. All at once he recalled his thoughts about the world and the rattrap and he had indeed fallen into the rattrap

Q.8. Why did the ironmaster speak kindly to the peddler and invite him home?

Ans. The ironmaster mistook the peddler for his old acquaintance, the regimental comrade, captuin van stable. He was shocked to see that his old comrade had fallen on bed days so, he invited him to his own house to give company at Christmas and it to make his future secure.

Ans. The peddler decline the invitation as he was afraid of being detected as a thief because he had the stolen thirty kroner bills with him and accepting the invitation" would be like throwing himself voluntarily into the lion's den therefore, the peddier thought it better to decline the invitation.

Ans. Edla willmansson had power of persuasion. She looked at the peddler quite compassionately. She knew he was afraid. So she aunted him that no harm would be allowed to leave just as freely as he came. Her friendly manacr made the peddler feel confidence in her and sccepted the invitation.

Ans. When Edla willmateson came to the forge to persuade him, she looked at him compassionately, with her heavy eyes, and then she noticed that the man was afraid. "Either he has stolen something or else he has escaped from jail", Moreover there was nothing in him to show that he ind once been an educated man

Ans. When the ironmaater saw the strange fellow in the uncertain reflection from the furnace,

he was mistaken for an old sequaintance but now it was impossible for him to do mistake in the day-fight with peddler's clean shaved and well-dressed manner. In this way, he realised his mistake.

Ans. When the Ironmaster understood about his mistake for an old acquaintance. The strange made no attempt to dissimulate. He said that it was not his fault. He never pretended to be anything but a poor trade and he pleaded and begged to be allowed to stay in the forge. But no harm has been done. At last he said that this world is nothing but a big sattrap.

Even after knowing the reality about the peddler she wanted him to stay with them on Christmas Eve and enjoy a day of peace. In her view, it was not proper to chase away a person whom they had invited on Christmas

Q.15. Why did the peddler sign himself as Captain Von stable?

Ans. The ironmaster has invited the peddler to his bouse mistaking him for captain Von stalle He was welcomed there and looked after as captain even after the reality became known. The peddler got a chance to redeem hunself from dishonest ways by acting as an honourable captain
